Russell Wilson admits Jaxon Smith-Njigba reminds him of former UDFA receiver

Just like everyone else, Russell Wilson has been amazed by Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s start to the 2026 NFL season.
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year has picked up from exactly where he left off last year, with 277 yards and four touchdowns through his opening two games.

Mike Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks are on an incredible run of form, having lost just one of their last 17 games.
Smith-Njigba’s route-running skills have been key to the Seahawks’ offensive form, with former quarterback Wilson now comparing the wideout to one former undrafted free agent.

During his time in Seattle, Wilson was able to work with some of the league’s most underrated wide receivers.
Despite being the current OPOY, there is still the feeling that Smith-Njigba is not quite given the praise he deserves.
“He does such a great job at the line of scrimmage to get open. He creates that separation. You saw that double move that he did the other day,” Wilson said on CBS Sports.
“Guys like Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin, who were great at those double moves, are really about keeping those shoulders the same; everything feels the exact same. He [JSN] did that extremely well.”
Doug Baldwin remains one of the great stories of the NFL having gone from being an undrafted free agent to a Super Bowl champion.
The retired wide receiver also had that famous interaction with Deion Sanders, where he hit back at a comment over him being a mediocre wideout.
Smith-Njigba has certainly received wider praise than Baldwin ever did, but it is clear that Wilson can see a lot of similarities in the way he and the former Seahawk played the game.
Although Baldwin only managed to rack up two seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards, his legacy in the Pacific Northwest is that of a true Seattle great.
