Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says a 'look-at-me society' contributed to Colin Simmons' urination celebration vs. Tennessee

Was modern society partially to blame for Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons pretending to urinate on the field in celebration against Tennessee?

It may seem like an odd question to ask. But the possibility was raised by Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian in his postgame news conference after No. 1 Texas' 20-17 win over the No. 14 Volunteers. Simmons apologized after the game for his celebration that drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. After one of his five sacks, Simmons made it look like, well, he was relieving himself on the field.

Sarkisian said that the coaching staff "addressed" the penalty with Simmons and, understandably, said that the team wasn't going to bench him for the rest of the game over one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

And then he continued.

"We took him out, we addressed it and put him back in," Sarkisian said. "At that point, I'm not going to give the guy the death penalty, right? Over an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. We've gotta fix it though. That can't continue as we move forward. So as I touched on with the team in the locker room. We'll address that on Monday and what that looks like. And how to control our emotions and the best way — I know guys are excited when they're making plays. The best thing you can go do is celebrate with a teammate."

"And unfortunately in our society right now, we live in the look-at-me society. And all you guys have your Twitter accounts and as fast as you can type something, because you want everyone to look at your account and get clicks. Well that's the world that we live in. So we've got to get to it's about the team and focus on the team and not so much look at me. And so we'll try to improve on that. But five sacks was pretty cool today too."

Simmons' celebration was not the only groin-related one displayed by a Texas player. However, it was the only one flagged. After scoring a touchdown with less than six minutes to go in the game, Raleek Brown did this. Perhaps society played a role in that one as well.

Simmons finished the game with three other tackles to go along with his five sacks. And he's also probably thankful that Tennessee didn't get points on the drive where he was flagged. The Vols went for it on fourth down at the end of that drive but Faizon Brandon's pass fell incomplete.

The No. 1 Longhorns are off in Week 5 before their rivalry game with Oklahoma in Week 6. We'll see if the week off leads to some different celebrations against the Sooners.
