Kernels boast three bracket winners, finish second as a team at ESD girls tennis

Sep. 29—SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell High School girls tennis scored three flight titles and finished in second place at the Eastern South Dakota Conference championship meet on Tuesday.
Charlee Cimpl was a double winner for the Kernels, winning the Flight 5 singles title and the Flight 3 doubles title with teammate Taryn Bultje. Elliot Smith also emerged with the Flight 4 singles championship, as well.

Harrisburg, which had champions in the top-three flights of singles play and at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, won the team points race with 359 points, followed by Mitchell at 308.5. The rest of the top-five included Aberdeen Central (171), Watertown (110.5) and Brandon Valley (110).
Smith was the No. 1 seed at Flight 4 and cruised in the first two rounds with 10-1 victories. She then topped Harrisburg's Abbie Frye in the championship round by a 10-7 score. Smith improved her record to 21-6 this season.
Cimpl, who was the No. 1 seed at Flight 5 and won three matches on the way to the Flight 5 singles title, which was capped with a 10-4 victory over Brandon Valley's Leighton Guetter in the championship round. Cimpl is now 19-7 this season at Flight 5.
Cimpl and Bultje combined forces in the No. 3 doubles bracket, where they were the No. 1 seed. The duo won three matches, including the championship match over Brandon Valley's pair of Grace Dew and Taetum Horstmeyer by a 10-5 score.
Mitchell had a pair of second-place finishes in the singles flights, including Katie Morgan finishing second at Flight 1 and Bultje taking second at Flight 6. Morgan fell to top-seeded Noa Lovro, of Harrisburg, in the championship match 10-5, while Brandon Valley's Horstmeyer held off Bultje 10-7 in the Flight 6 championship.
The Kernel doubles duo of Mia Larson and Elliot Smith finished in second place at Flight 2. Harrisburg's Jessi Muth and Abbie Frye won the championship match by claiming a match tiebreaker over the top seeds Larson and Smith, 9-9 (7-2).
Morgan and Ava Prunty finished third at No. 1 doubles, and Prunty was third solo at Flight 3 singles. Mia Larson had a fifth-place finish for the Kernels at No. 2 singles.
The tournament was moved from Aberdeen and held indoors at the Huether Family Match Pointe facility in Sioux Falls due to the weather forecast.
Mitchell will next play in the Class AA state tennis tournament on Oct. 8-9 in Rapid City.
