NY Giants release WR Odell Beckham Jr., per reports

The New York Giants are releasing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., per reports from Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

The Giants signed Beckham, 33, for the second time this summer along with fellow veteran receivers Braxton Berrios and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Beckham was solid but unspectacular in his return to the Giants. He was able to consistently work open in the preseason, but the ball never really found him in games.
He proved to still be a fan favorite once the regular season started and received ovations from the home, but rarely even saw the field. Instead, the former star had been reduced to a decoy and downfield blocker on the few snaps he did receive over the first three games of the season.
Beckham’s usage (or lack thereof) on offense had observers wondering what he was even doing on the team, considering he doesn’t play special teams.
In releasing Beckham, the Giants are now only carrying three (3) wide receivers on their 53-man roster: Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and rookie Malachi Fields.
The move to release Beckham comes as Berrios, the Giants’ primary returner, has exhausted his elevations from the practice squad. The Giants must now decide to sign him to the main roster or leave him on the practice squad for the remainder of the year.
Jordan Schulz is reporting that Beckham won’t be joining the Giants’ practice squad. Instead, he’ll be looking for an opportunity to play elsewhere after proving that he still has what it takes to make an NFL roster.
