Yankees reveal surprising Giancarlo Stanton decision

The MLB postseason is about to begin, and the New York Yankees have made a surprising decision involving veteran slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Despite not playing since April 24, Stanton will be included on the Yankees’ roster for their upcoming Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox. The 36-year-old has endured a difficult season because of multiple injuries but has apparently done enough to convince the Yankees that he can contribute in the postseason.

Stanton battles back from injuries

Stanton originally suffered a calf strain in April and was expected to return in June. However, he re-aggravated the injury while practicing running the bases, delaying his comeback.

The veteran then suffered another setback in August when he injured his other calf. That injury forced Stanton to miss additional time and left his availability for the postseason uncertain.

On Monday evening, Stanton participated in live batting practice as he attempted to show manager Aaron Boone that he was ready to return. The effort appears to have paid off, with Stanton now set to join the Yankees for their playoff matchup.

Stanton, who is in his 17th MLB season, is still searching for his first World Series championship. He played just 24 games during the 2026 regular season, batting .256 with three home runs and 14 RBI.

Stanton’s playoff experience

While his regular-season availability has been limited, Stanton brings considerable postseason experience to the Yankees. He has hit 18 home runs with a .254 batting average across 202 postseason plate appearances in his career.

The Yankees will hope that experience can provide a boost against their longtime rivals when the Wild Card series begins Tuesday in the Bronx.

New York and Boston are meeting in the Wild Card round for the second consecutive year. The Yankees won two of three games in last year’s postseason series and also finished the 2026 regular season with a 7-6 record against the Red Sox.

With Stanton now on the roster, the Yankees will have another experienced bat available as they begin their push toward a World Series title.
