The Yankees did not just sweep the Red Sox out of the Wild Card Series. They authored something no team has managed in more than a century of postseason baseball. New York outscored Boston 18-2 across two games, accounting for 90% of the runs in the series.

That makes the Yankees the first team in MLB history to score at least 90 percent of the total runs in a postseason series among matchups with 20 or more combined runs.

Game 1 set the tone. Cam Schlittler shut Boston out in a 9-0 win Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, with Ben Rice, a Massachusetts native, delivering a late grand slam and six RBIs against his hometown team. The Red Sox managed three hits.

Game 2 followed the same script with a different cast. Max Fried dominated Boston in the playoffs for a second consecutive October, and the Yankees broke open a 2-1 game with a six-run sixth inning. Cody Bellinger supplied the knockout blow with a three-run homer off Garrett Whitlock, and Luis Garcia Jr. added a solo shot earlier in the night.

Boston’s offense never materialized. The Red Sox hit .117 as a team, going 7-for-60 with 18 strikeouts across the two games. Their only run came on a Willson Contreras solo homer in the sixth inning Wednesday, which ended a 26-inning postseason scoreless streak dating back to last year. Fifteen of New York’s 18 runs were charged to the Boston bullpen.

The collapse had been building. Boston finished September last in the majors with a .219 batting average, ranking near the bottom in both on-base percentage and slugging.

For the Yankees, it extends their recent control of the rivalry. New York also eliminated Boston in last year’s Wild Card Series, winning that one in three games, and now advances to the Division Series for a third straight season.

A tougher test awaits. New York faces the top-seeded Rays, who won the AL East, in a Division Series beginning Saturday.
