It’s officially autumn, officially October, and—if you ask me—officially the best time of year. Depending on your intentions for the months ahead, you can make this season whatever you want.

What type of autumn are you craving this year? Here are five potential fall vibes to cultivate.

1. Cozy and Slow Autumn

If you’re feeling tired and introverted after a wild and social summer, you’re not alone. I often use this time of year to slow down and cuddle up on the couch with a good book or comfort show. As the weather cools and the days grow shorter, it’s common to feel more lethargic or crave more rest. Listen to your body this autumn and allow yourself more time to relax and enjoy each moment. Hang some orange string lights, light a few pumpkin or apple candles, bake your favorite autumnal treats, and let the season calm your nervous system.

2. Nostalgic and Reflective Autumn

Autumn is a great time for self-reflection, especially as you settle back into routine. Additionally, this time of year often triggers nostalgia for many people. For example, as I decorate my home for Halloween, I remember trick-or-treating with my older brothers as a child or watching Halloween movie marathons with my parents. 

If you miss that innocent autumn magic, cultivate it in your own life. Reflect on what makes you feel safe, loved, and at peace—and give yourself more of that this season.

3. Healing and Intentional Autumn

Many people view the fall as an ideal time to heal. As we get back to school or work, we may feel more grounded in our routines and ready to tackle what needs addressing. Maybe you want to get back into the gym, cook more meals at home, or even journal through difficult emotions. 

Whatever the case, try to live this season more intentionally. Wake with the sun, move your body when it aches for movement, say no to plans that overwhelm you. Give yourself what you need without guilt, and—like the trees shed their leaves—release what no longer serves you this autumn.

4. Social and Active Autumn

For some people, autumn is a time to come alive. While I love a cozy, relaxing fall, I also tend to have more energy during this time of the year. The weather is milder, I’m inspired by the gorgeous scenery, and autumnal activities are right up my alley. If you relate, find ways to schedule in some fall festivities and social events that excite you. Think: pumpkin picking, hiking through fall foliage, outdoor coffee dates, or even a Halloween party.

5. Outdoorsy and Adventurous Autumn

Depending on where you live, autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Thankfully, I’m in the Northeastern U.S., so my fall is filled with vibrant leaves, gloomy skies, and ideal temperatures. Needless to say, I love being outside during autumn.

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, use this season to reconnect with nature and explore different areas, even if it’s just within your own hometown. Head out for hikes, attend fall festivals, sip Pinot Grigio at a winery overlooking the changing leaves, or even plan a scenic road trip with your loved ones. 

And if you don’t have the time or energy for those kinds of outings, at the very least, open your windows for some fresh, cool air.
