A Georgia man was recently arrested for allegedly faking a medical emergency to avoid having to pay his $63 Red Lobster bill.
Local police accuse the 26-year-old of calling 911 at Red Lobster in Douglasville, Ga., on Sept. 24 to get himself out of picking up the tab, WSB-TV Atlanta reported.
When first responders arrived, they allegedly found him in fine health, but reluctant to fork over the cash for his seafood meal.
The bill was for $63.77, according to an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE .
The affidavit reportedly alleged he engaged in “unlawful conduct” during his 911 call “by deception and with intent to avoid payment.”
Four-figure bond for alleged ruse
Abdul Rasheed was arrested and charged with theft of services and unlawful conduct during a 911 call, according to records posted on the Douglas County Jail’s website.
His bond was set at $4,500, which is just over 70 times more than his Red Lobster bill.
In Georgia, both charges are misdemeanours, with a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail for each. A theft of services charge for goods or services valued at less than $1,500 carries a maximum fine of $1,000, while an unlawful conduct during a 911 call charge has a fine of up to $500.
Rasheed is currently free on bond, the Douglas County Sentinel reported.
Charges aside, dialling 911 for a non-emergency in the city probably isn’t the smartest option as Douglas County recently started charging a $100 fee on 911 calls when the patient is treated but not transported to a hospital.
