New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown shared a powerful message following their first preseason game of the 2026-27 NBA season. They faced the Philadelphia 76ers and suffered a 120-97 defeat on Monday. Unfortunately for the 76ers, backup center Ariel Hukporti suffered an ankle injury.

Initially reported by The Athletic that the 2026 NBA champion suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the entire regular season. However, the publication clarified that it did not confirm Hukporti’s Achilles injury.
When the big man suffered the injury, his former Knicks teammates assisted him to the locker room. Brown wished Hukporti the best and hopes to see him back in action soon.

And he gets back on the floor,” Brown said. “First of all, you hate to see anybody go down with an injury. … Hopefully he’ll have a speedy recovery.”
Hukporti played for the Knicks over the past two seasons. He won the Larry O’Brien Trophy with the team last season before he left in free agency. He signed a one-year, $3.4 million contract with the 76ers over the summer.
Mike Brown had the pleasure of coaching the 24-year-old big man. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse gave an update on Hukporti after the team’s preseason win.
“No,” Nurse said, on any update about the big man. “They’re doing the imaging tomorrow. … Right Achilles, they’re gonna look at.”
Mike Brown Was Not Satisfied With the Knicks’ Lack of Physicality
Although it’s only the preseason, Mike Brown believes the Knicks should not be relaxed with the way they play. He criticized the team’s lack of physicality against the 76ers and wants to see improvements moving forward.
“Most of it, I’m okay with. I just listed things that I saw that I know we can be better at,” the coach said. “What bothers me is our lack of physicality throughout the ball game. That’s the whole roster up and down. We weren’t great on the ball, physically, and we weren’t great with our defensive positioning, physically.
“Even the box outs. We just turned and stepped into the rim and it came right over our backs.”
Brown said he does not want to see the Knicks with subpar effort in the upcoming games. He also said it’s the players’ job to figure out how to be more physical on both ends. New York’s next preseason game is on Thursday against the Washington Wizards.
