Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald is trending toward returning for Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills after missing Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles with back soreness.

Head coach Sean McVay said Monday that the Rams hope Donald can practice this week and play on Monday Night Football. His comments offered an encouraging update after the Rams held the 35-year-old defensive lineman out of Week 4 rather than rush him back.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter took to X, formerly Twitter, Monday with the Rams head coach’s latest assessment of Donald’s status ahead of the Week 5 matchup with the Bills.

“That’s the hope. I don’t want to pigeonhole, but yeah, that’s the direction that it looks like it’s trending in.”

The injury interrupted Donald’s comeback after he ended his retirement in August. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year signed a one-year deal reportedly worth $20 million, with incentives that could raise it to $30 million.

Donald sat out the opener while completing his ramp-up before appearing in Weeks 2 and 3. He recorded four tackles, one tackle for loss and one quarterback hit across 68 defensive snaps, without a sack.

Los Angeles is set to host the Bills on October 12 at SoFi Stadium. The Rams’ first official injury report is not due until Thursday because the matchup falls on Monday night.

Donald’s practice participation will provide the clearest indication of his availability. McVay’s comments point toward a potential return, but the Rams have not confirmed that Donald will play against Buffalo.

Until then, Los Angeles will continue evaluating how his back responds as preparations intensify for the Week 5 matchup.
