Centre tells states to prevent protesters from travelling to Delhi: Reports

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday asked all states and Union Territories to help the Delhi Police by taking preventive measures to stop protesters from travelling towards the national capital, The Hindu reported.

In its letter to chief secretaries and state police chiefs, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan flagged the “grave law and order and public order implications” of the planned protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign on Saturday, the newspaper reported.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The police have imposed several restrictions to stop protesters from gathering in the national capital, in what the organisers described as intimidation by the authorities. The measures include detaining persons, cancelling trains, closing 45 metro stations and suspending mobile internet in central Delhi.

The protest comes after several days of the Opposition INDIA bloc holding their own demonstrations in the national capital. Demonstrations have also been held in other parts of the country calling for Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
