FARMINGTON - An early October victory in Week 5 of the high school football season usually doesn't carry much weight.

That is, unless you're part of the 2026 Simsbury football team. The Trojans' 16-0 CCC win at Farmington was worth documenting.

On their way back to the locker room with their fourth victory in five weeks, several Trojans made sure to pose in front of the home team's scoreboard.
Why? After three seasons of losing, a 4-1 start matched the win total over those past three seasons.
Prior to going 1-9 last season, the Trojans endured 2-8 and 1-9 campaigns.
"There is just a completely different buy in. Last year, we were 1-9 and that is not what anyone was looking for," Simsbury senior quarterback Braeden Siano said. "Buy in with our new head coach. Buy in with the line. A new coaching staff.
"All together, the line, defense ... I really feel like the buy-in is what's getting us these games," Siano added.
Siano, who started as a junior after moving to Simsbury from Massachusetts, was quick to reference new head coach Jim Caouette - Simsbury's third new man in charge in as many years. Caouette arrived on the scene this year after nine seasons as an assistant at Holy Cross.
Caouette's intensity and attention to detail were apparent all night. His voice was as crisp as the autumn air, echoing across the field until the final seconds ticked off.
"Our kids have bought into the system we are trying to run and our assistant coaches do a wonderful job getting the kids prepared," Caouette said. "I couldn't be happier (to be) 4-1 right now, and where the program is going. We have a lot of things to clean up, but to be 4-1 heading into the bye, I couldn't be happier."
The Trojans never trailed. After holding the River Hawks to a quick three-and-out, Siano hit a streaking Aaron Blecher down the sideline for a 67-yard touchdown on Simsbury's first play.
But after that quick start, it was Simsbury's defense that shined.
The Trojans twice stopped the River Hawks on downs in the first half. They also got an interception from Kayveon Long at their own 30 to stop Farmington's second drive of the game - a 13-play march that included a successful fake punt.
Simsbury was stopped just short of the goal line midway through the second quarter.
But after two runs got Farmington some breathing room, quarterback Mason Kiniry was sacked in the end zone by Long and fellow senior Jesse Carst for a safety and a 9-0 lead for the Trojans.
"When we are out here cooking, making plays and tackling. I'm in the huddle saying, ‘Go out there, finishing strong, give me everything you've got,'" said Long. "It's the little things. That's what I've been preaching. We fix those things up and this is the success we get.
"I couldn't ask for anything more," Long added.
Simsbury led 9-0 at halftime. The Trojans took the second-half kickoff 60 yards on seven plays, and Siano found senior Cole Roberts for a 9-yard touchdown pass to make it 16-0 with 8:09 left in the third quarter.
Siano finished 15-of-26 for 213 yards. He was complemented by Nasir Gouldbourne, who ran for 84 yards on 16 carries.
Farmington, enjoying its own resurgence this season, came into the contest averaging 30 points a game, but lost starting quarterback Kiniry to injury.
Sophomore Colton Anderson started the second half behind center and was effective at times. He drove the River Hawks to the Trojans' 13-yard line with 5:12 to play.
But on fourth down, his pass to Tyler McMahon came up short of a first down and the Trojans proceeded to run out the clock.
"You want to learn some things about yourself and who you are ... and still get a victory," Farmington head coach Chris Machol said. "That didn't happen. But I told the kids, they were 3-1 for a reason and we were 3-1 for a reason. I told the guys it would come down to executing plays."

"When we needed a stop to keep them out of the end zone, our kids stepped up to the challenge. It was just a good overall defensive effort."
