With Curtis Jones leaving for Inter Milan - and Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic also departing - it was speculated that a new midfielder would be arriving.
The club were reported to be active in the chase for Monaco’s Lamine Camara - but by the time the window slammed shut Andoni Iraola was left relying on the same cast of characters in midfield.
Liverpool's lack of midfield options
With Dominik Szoboszlai failing to recover from an injury problem picked up on international duty in time for Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City the dearth of options has really been brought into focus.
Beyond the Hungary icon senior midfielders are thin on the ground with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch effectively the only two that Iraola can choose in the engine room.
Owing to a shortage in the position it has been suggested that the 2024/25 Premier League champions would be active in the market come January.
Liverpool linked with £47m Lamine Camara
There is a chance that the Reds will compete once again for £47m-rated Senegal international Camara - given Monaco’s precarious financial state.
However a deal is not going to be straightforward because Liverpool have overseen another staggering spend in the summer transfer window.
Instead - according to Paul Gorst in the Liverpool Echo - it may be the case that Trey Nyoniwill come into the picture more fully in the next few months.
Trey Nyoni will be given his chance
The former Leicester teen will be given a chance to prove himself in the first team and if he performs well then the Anfield side may well stay out of the race for Camara.
“It's probably too early to say if Liverpool will do any business in January,” he writes.
“They were of course still assessing potential right-wing options before deciding to keep Cody Gakpo and there was talk of late interest in Lamine Camara at Monaco.
“The midfield issue is the one that concerns me most but a lot depends on Trey Nyoni's development.
“I'd be looking at the centre of the park for January if I was newly-appointed sporting director Julian Ward.”
Nyoni signed for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp back in 2023 - rising quickly through the youth ranks and emerging as a first-team option.
He suffered under Arne Slot - barely playing - and was suggested as a potential summer loanee. England under-21 international Nyoni stayed put however but is still waiting for his decisive breakthrough under Andoni Iraola.
