The Denver Broncos bounced back from their Week 4 loss by securing a 23-17 win over Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. However, beyond the much-needed win, Denver running back JK Dobbinswas particularly pleased to see head coach Sean Payton return to calling the offensive plays.

Dobbins praised Payton’s understanding of his playing style and explained how their familiarity helped create a stronger connection on the field.

“Coach Sean Payton knows me well,” Payton said. “He knows me very well. He knows me well, and I know him well. You can see the chemistry between us and the team, the offense. So that’s what was different. I just got the opportunity.”

Payton officially relieved offensive coordinator Davis Webb of his play-calling duties earlier this week. However, the Broncos’ offensive performance against the Chargers showed that the decision had yet to produce significant results on the field.

Denver finished the game with just 224 total offensive yards, converting only one of 12 third-down attempts while averaging 3.9 yards per play and recording 118 passing yards on Saturday. Their starting quarterback, Bo Nix, finished with just 123 passing yards and one touchdown.

Payton himself appeared less than satisfied with the offensive display following the Broncos’ Week 5 victory.

“You’re looking for small steps,” Payton said. “There were some things that were good and then, specifically just staying on the field and converting four or five more third-downs. I’ve got to be a little bit better too, just with some of those calls relative to protection.”

Payton handled the Broncos’ offensive play-calling duties from 2023 through 2025 before Webb took over the responsibility ahead of this season.

The head coach’s decision to resume play-calling duties did not instantly resolve Denver’s offensive struggles, but the victory provided a positive result. The latest win improved Denver to 3-2 in the season, while the Chargers’ losing streak extended to 0-5.
