Vikings insider expects Nolan Teasley to be 'really, really active' before trade deadline

The Vikings have started the season 5-0, but it’s clear they have some room for improvement before they can become true Super Bowl contenders. The trade deadline could be an interesting opportunity to refine their roster, and one insider thinks Minnesota could be busy.

The Athletic‘s Alec Lewis joined KFAN’s 9 to Noon on Friday and spoke about what Minnesota’s strategy could be before the Nov. 10 deadline. He was asked about Jauan Jennings’ future with the team, which turned into a much broader discussion.
“Obviously the production from a pass-catching standpoint hasn’t been there,” Lewis said about Jennings. “I’ve also thought, like, when you go back and watch the tape, there are instances where you can see the blocking prowess that he provides, but also other snaps and examples where it just feels like you need a little more physicality. So to answer your question directly, I think it’s really going to come down to whether or not there is another team that is willing to offer the Vikings something of value.”
Jennings signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Vikings in the offseason. He has gotten off to an abnormally slow start with just two catches for nine yards. He had nine touchdowns last season with the 49ers, but he looks like a different player this year in Minnesota.
“And it’s similar for me to, like, the J.J. McCarthy conversation in that, yes, if the value does reach a certain point, the Vikings will listen, but they’re not trying to just push a player like that out the door,” Lewis continued. “So we’ll see what happens over the next week or so. But I do think, I mean, we’re going to talk a lot, I’m sure, on 9 to Noon, you guys are, in The Athletic, we are, about the trade deadline and what’s possible, and I just expect Nolan Teasley and this front office to be really, really active, whether that produces a bunch of moves or not. I do expect that to be the case over the next three weeks.”
Whether Jennings holds enough value to find a trade partner remains to be seen, but the Vikings have a lot more pressing needs than moving their WR3 for draft capital. Lewis mentioned a block-first tight end as a potential position they could target. It’s not flashy, but Minnesota has desperately missed Josh Oliver’s run blocking.
New general manager Nolan Teasley has a track record of being creative when it comes to building his roster, dating back to last year with the Seahawks, when he was part of the front office that traded for Rashid Shaheed. Running back appears to be a position where Minnesota could make a similar move this year.
Aaron Jones is aging, Jordan Mason is banged up and Minnesota’s run game is stuck in neutral. They could also look at beefing up the offensive line, as Donovan Jackson’s season-ending injury severely hurt their depth at guard. Exactly who their targets could be at those positions is what Teasley and his front office will need to figure out over the next few weeks.
There’s still more than three weeks until this year’s deadline, and the Vikings have an opportunity to take a big swing as they look to establish themselves as true Super Bowl contenders.
