In a statement issued, Meth expressed shock over the incident and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.

The shooting has renewed concerns about workplace safety and the need to ensure that employees can perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.

“This incident happened no less than mere days after World Mental Health Day on 10 October,” Meth said.

“We extend our deepest sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and all colleagues of the victims during this devastating time. No person should ever fear for their life or personal safety while carrying out their duties and responsibilities in the workplace.”

Calls for safer working environments

The Department of Employment and Labour has urged employers and employees to strengthen workplace relationships through open communication and constructive conflict resolution.

The department encouraged ongoing dialogue between management, labour representatives and employees to help resolve grievances before they escalate.

Employers have also been urged to strengthen their Employee Wellness Programmes to ensure workers have access to appropriate mental health support.

The department said employees should make use of these programmes to help them manage stress, workplace conflict and personal challenges.

The calls come as the department emphasises the importance of creating working environments where employees feel safe and supported.

Minister urges public not to share graphic footage

Meth has also appealed to members of the public to refrain from circulating graphic footage of the shooting.

She urged people to respect the privacy and grief of the victims’ families and colleagues during this difficult time.

The minister reiterated the need for justice for those affected, while the incident has highlighted the importance of workplace safety and access to support for employees experiencing difficulties.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including its reported connection to an internal disciplinary process, remain central to the incident as authorities are called upon to ensure accountability.
