Rams’ Kicker Problems Worsen With Unfortunate Injury

The Los Angeles Rams took yet another blow to their special teams unit on Sunday, as newly signed kicker Blake Grupe suffered a knee injury.

Grupe suffered the injury in the first quarter, trying to take down Cardinals kick returner Devin Duvernay on a kickoff. Duvernay shoved the kicker off, sending him to the floor. Shortly afterwards, the Rams announced Grupe was doubtful to return with a knee injury. Grupe converted his only field goal attempt prior to his injury—a 44-yarder.

The Rams signed Grupe Tuesday, after the team waived Harrison Mevis the day prior. Mevis missed both of his field goal attempts on Monday, and had missed three in a row before his exit. On the year, the kicker made just five of his nine field goals.

Punter Ethan Evans warmed up on the sidelines following the injury, and he will likely fill in for Grupe for the time being. Prior to Sunday’s game, Evans had never attempted a field goal in the NFL, though he converted 10 of 18 attempts in his senior season at Wingate University—the longest conversion being 41 yards.

Who is Blake Grupe?

Grupe has three NFL seasons under his belt, spending two and a half of those with the New Orleans Saints and the latter half of the 2025 season with the Indianapolis Colts. The 27-year-old attempted 95 field goals with the Saints over the course of three seasons, and converted 75 of those opportunities.

The Saints waived him midway through the 2025 season, as he missed eight field goals in 26 tries and made just five of 11 from 40 or more yards out.

The Colts signed him up for the remainder of the season, and he went a perfect 11-for-11 through the final five weeks of the season. He stayed with the team heading into 2026, but didn’t make it through preseason roster cuts. He spent the year with the Jets’ practice squad before the Rams signed him up following Mevis’ dismissal.

With Grupe sidelined, the Rams will be without a proper placekicker for the remainder of the game, and will hope Evans can help them beat the Cardinals in a must-win game if they want to stay in the race in the NFC West.
