Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to be sidelined through at least the remainder of this NFL season after being diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs and placed on blood thinners as a treatment.

Hurts has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, according to a statement released Monday by his agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles. He is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” Lynn and the team said in their statement, and his treatment “should only involve anticoagulation.”

Hurts will not be permitted to play football while being treated with blood thinners, they said.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” Lynn and the Eagles said in their statement. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.

“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”

Hurts’s treatment is expected to last for at least three months, the NFL Network/ESPN reported. Lynn did not immediately respond to a request by Front Office Sports for further details about the timetable for Hurts’s potential return to football. The Eagles declined further comment on that issue.

The Eagles placed him on the injured reserve list Saturday.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, a pulmonary embolism “is a blood clot that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung. In most cases, the blood clot starts in a deep vein in the leg and travels to the lung. Rarely, the clot forms in a vein in another part of the body. When a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, it’s called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).”

Lynn and the Eagles said in Monday’s statement that Hurts “was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.” His current diagnosis came after “further testing and monitoring,” they said.

“Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts,” Lynn and the team said. “In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.”

Hurts, 28, did not play in the Eagles’ loss Sunday to the Panthers in Philadelphia. He did play the previous Sunday during a defeat to the Jaguars in London.

The Eagles announced Thursday that an ultrasound performed in London the day before the Jaguars game revealed that Hurts had a superficial blood clot. The team’s medical staff and doctors in London concluded that Hurts could safely play against the Jaguars, the Eagles said. A follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night “revealed movement in the small blood clot,” the Eagles said, ruling out Hurts from playing Sunday against the Panthers.

According to the NFL Network/ESPN, Hurts played in the London game without having slept the previous night because he was in a hospital until 4 a.m. and was advised that sleep was a risk.

The Super Bowl LIX MVP signed a five-year, $255 million contract extension with the Eagles in 2023. According to Spotrac, $22 million of Hurts’s 2027 income became fully guaranteed on the third day of this league year, and another $696,000 would become fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2027 league year in March.

News of Hurts’ season-ending injury comes just 13 days after Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement four games into the 2026 campaign. Following its loss to the Panthers on Sunday, Philadelphia enters its Week 7 Monday Night Football matchup against the Cowboys with a 2–4 record.
