Analysts discuss Texas QB future after consecutive losses

Texas quarterback Arch Manning is facing questions about his future as the 2027 NFL Draft approaches. At the start of the 2026 college football season, he was considered a potential first-round pick and a Heisman Trophy candidate. However, his recent performances have raised concerns about his consistency, particularly after Texas suffered consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida.

Through his first six games, Manning completed 63.85% of his passes for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Against Texas State, he threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Against Ohio State, he recorded 195 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also threw an interception against Tennessee.

Texas lost 27–24 to Oklahoma on October 10. Manning completed 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter. The turnovers came late in the fourth quarter as Texas tried to hold its lead.

The Longhorns suffered another 27–24 defeat against Florida on October 17. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown without an interception, but he was sacked five times and lost a late fumble. He had also faced criticism recently over an incident in which he appeared to hit a teammate in the head.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes Manning should return to college for another season but should not remain at Texas. Orlovsky shared his opinion on social media, writing: Arch should definitely go back to school (as of right now) and definitely not at Texas.

Transferring to another college, including Miami or Indiana, has been discussed as a possibility. However, Manning has not announced any plans to leave Texas. Moving to another program could give him the opportunity to work with a different coaching staff and play in a different offensive system. Returning to college for another year could also allow him to gain experience and improve consistency before entering the NFL Draft.

Entering the 2027 NFL Draft also remains an option for Manning. His passing yards and touchdown numbers remain important parts of his profile, but his interceptions have drawn increased attention following the recent defeats.

Despite the consecutive losses, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has continued to support Manning. At the same time, the Longhorns need to improve their offensive performance. Backup quarterback KJ Lacey Jr. has also received additional opportunities during practice, although Texas has not announced a change to its starting quarterback.

Manning’s performances in the remaining games could influence his future plans. However, he has not announced any decision on whether he will enter the NFL Draft, return to Texas or explore a transfer.
