Lampard on Coventry City midfielder’s injury setback and duo’s absences

Frank Lampard has explained why summer signings Loum Tchaouna and Yann Gboho have been absent from Coventry City’s matchday squads.

The French forwards, who joined the Sky Blues for a combined £30million in the summer, have both struggled for game time since arriving.

Neither player is injured, and Lampard says their absence is simply part of the process of adapting to his demands.

“They’re training and they’re fit and I think they’re adapting to how we are, how we play, how we train and the ideas, so it’s very normal,” Lampard said.

“Yann came in on the last day of the transfer window, even beyond that because it was protracted for a few more days.

“He also went over to the Ivory Coast on international duty, which is great. But the players have been working in a certain way for a long time here and Yann has adapted fine.

“He’s got talent, that’s for sure, and that’s that. I have a squad to pick and sometimes it’s not easy to pick. It’s the hardest part of my job.”

Lampard added that Tchaouna is in a similar position.

“Loum, similarly, has to understand what we want on the pitch, off the pitch, on the ball, off the ball, as every player does,” he said.

“So we’re working towards that and that’s it.”

Lampard also provided an update on Josh Eccles, whose return has been delayed by an ankle problem after recovering from a calf injury.

“He’s progressing,” Lampard said.

“The ankle has been an annoyance really for all of us because his calf injury has cleared up and now the ankle has been a bit of a problem so it’s affecting his rehab and his recovery.

“He’s still not with us out on the grass yet.

“We’re looking forward to him being back outside with us.”
