Greencastle quarterback Cole Stephens is closing in on two state records going into the Tigers Cubs’ Class 2A Sectional 38 game at South Vermillion. Stephens needs four completions to break the state record for career completions set last year by Lapel’s Devin Craig with 833.

While that record seems almost certain to fall, the state career yardage record could also be in sight. Stephens currently has 11,850 career passing yards to rank No. 3 all-time. He needs 69 yards to pass former Gibson Southern star and Mr. Football Brady Allen for No. 2 and 346 yards to break the record of 12,195 set by Jake Schiff of Evansville Mater Dei in 2001.

Greencastle is 4-5. South Vermillion is 5-4. The winner will play the winner of the showdown between South Putnam (9-0) and Cascade (8-1).

Stephens is completing 72.5% of his passes this season for 2,616 yards and 25 touchdowns. The Lehigh commit has also rushed for 788 yards and nine TDs.
