In 3A, No. 4 Jasper completed the upset over No. 1 Providence, 3-1, at Charlestown. No. 24 Mater Dei lost to No. 16 Batesville in four sets at Bloomington North.

And in 2A, No. 10 North Posey earned a straight-sets victory over Sullivan at Loogootee.

Time to take a deeper dive into how regionals weekend played out for SW Indiana teams.

Class 1A: Evansville Christian’s historic season continues

After creating history with its first sectional title in program history, Evansville Christian (29-3) did it again in Mitchell.

The Eagles were down a set to Christian Academy after one.  It was a position Jeni Gray’s group had not been in this postseason.

It is easy to get discouraged when trailing at this point in the season. Instead, Evansville Christian leaned on faith, trust and resilience to power through, taking three consecutive sets.

“We had to pass well and serve so that we could run our offense,” Gray said. “We didn’t start out doing that. They were determined, and they just did what I asked. We adjusted to the speed of the game, and then, we got back in the groove with our serve which is one of our weapons.”

It’s a postseason path that started with a win over sectional favorite Tecumseh (No. 3 in 1A). But on Saturday, the Eagles showed they were far from satisfied with what they had already accomplished.

And they did it with a smile on their faces throughout. Never deterred.

Evansville Christian libero Josephine Weisenborn has been pivotal to the Eagles’ defensive efforts all season. She came into the match leading the team in digs (467) and added several more against Christian Academy.

Weisenborn is the only senior on the team. To be a part of history in her final season is certainly meaningful.

“It’s sad and good,” Weisenborn said. “It’s a blessing that I get to lead the team, but also, it’s sad in that fact that I don’t have anybody that’s going with me. But I’m so happy that I get to lead my underclassmen because I love them so much.”

Evansville Christian can set its sights on a trip to Martinsville against No. 5 Greenwood Christian in the semi-state semifinals this Saturday, Oct. 31. The winner would advance to the championship match to play against the winner of No. 7 Shoals/No. 2 Indianapolis Lutheran. The semifinal matches are set for 9:30 a.m. CT and 11:30 a.m. CT respectively, with the final at 6 p.m. CT.

Class 4A: North’s historic season ends

After making an appearance in its first regional game in program history, North could not find a way to extend its season against Floyd Central.

It was a talented opponent the Huskies ran into, but they had their moments. The first two sets were closely decided, but it was the Highlanders that pulled away.

“Our serve receive was pushing the ball a little bit back behind the 10-foot line,” Lasher said. “We couldn’t get in system. We’d send a few free balls over, and Floyd Central made us pay for it. They ran a very efficient offense, and unfortunately, we just couldn’t keep up.”

It would finish in favor of Floyd Central: 26-24, 25-22, 25-13.

As North huddled up on the court after the match, positivity, not sadness, was the lingering emotion.

“It’s a start,” Lasher said. “It’s a start for this program to keep moving on to next year and be back in the exact same place.”

While several athletes are expected to return, the program will be without its libero in Anna McCandless. The senior came into the match leading the team in digs with 359.

“She is an amazing young lady,” Lasher said. “She kept everyone positive on the court. She is definitely going to be missed.”

Class 3A regionals

Jasperupsets No. 1 Providence

After not winning a regional title since 2015, Jasper has now won two in a row.

Its latest one came in impressive fashion against a top-ranked Providence team in four sets, winning 25-21, 25-13, 15-25, 25-21.

This was a Providence team that’s only losses came against the best teams Indiana and Kentucky have to offer. Jasper can now be added to that list.

Jennifer Hopf’s group had the belief, and it showed Saturday. They will not have to travel far on October 31 as semi-state hosts, either.

The Wildcats will play No. 2 Tri-West in the semi-state semifinal at 9 a.m. CT. The winner will go on to play either No. 4 Cathedral or Batesville in the championship match at 6 p.m. CT.

Expect an energetic environment to be felt inside the Jasper High School gymnasium on Halloween.

Mater Dei's season ends

It was a close match, but one that finished in Batesville’s favor by way of 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 over Mater Dei.

The Wildcats were unable to continue a special season after winning their first sectional since 2018. Regardless of the result, Amy Nussmeier’s group can be proud leaving Bloomington.

Kills leader Leah Heldman, aces/digs leader Madelan Mayer, assists leader Lauren Black and hitter Caroline Schultheis will be departing from the program as seniors.

Class 2A regionals: North Posey sweeps its way to title

North Posey won its first regional title since 2021 on Saturday.

It finished 27-25, 25-16, 25-22 against Sullivan at Loogootee. After two close matches in Sectional 48 that went the distance, the regional championship was not as grueling for the Vikings.

North Posey coach Natalie Macaulay highlighted the importance of community contributing to her group’s postseason success leading up to regionals. After the performance against Sullivan, it’s another win they can be proud of.

The Vikings will be off to Bedford North Lawrence for a semi-state semifinal meeting with No. 18 Heritage Christian Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. CT. The winner will play No. 16 Indianapolis Scecina or No. 3 Trinity Lutheran in the championship match later that night at 6 p.m. CT.
