Pat McAfee made it clear this week that he did not enjoy his trip to the University of Utah with College GameDay, going as far as to say that he hopes he never has to go back. But not everyone thinks the ESPN star’s reaction was warranted.

College football podcaster Brandon Walker weighed in on McAfee’s comments, saying that he doesn’t think the students in the video that upset McAfee were really taking shots at him. Walker made it clear that he’s a big fan of McAfee, but said he thinks McAfee “might have missed on the reaction to this one.”
McAfee’s Utah Complaints
GameDay was in Salt Lake City on Saturday for Utah’s game against Houston. Before the show, Utah Student Experience and the official University of Utah account posted a video of students doing their best McAfee impressions.
On Monday, McAfee said on The Pat McAfee Show that the post bothered him.
“I’ve really enjoyed this college football season. Did not enjoy University of Utah,” McAfee said, via Awful Announcing.
McAfee said he saw the university’s post right before he went out for the show, and that one of the students in it called him “creepy.”
McAfee also said he had “never been more uncomfortable” walking out in front of a crowd, and joked that he would have “COVID or something” whenever GameDay goes back.
‘Those Guys Weren’t Ready For Primetime’
Walker played the video on his show. In it, one student says McAfee is “going to say a corny line,” while another tells him to keep his shirt on.
Before giving his take, Walker said he loves McAfee and admitted that he’s “one of the most sensitive people on the internet” himself.
“Where I think he missed here is I don’t think that video was kids really taking shots at him,” Walker said, via the Brandon Walker College Football Show. “I think the first kid says, ‘Yeah, Pat’s going to say a corny line,’ uh, like Houston, we got a problem. I think he, he took umbrage at the word ‘corny,’ but I think the kid meant it in an endearing way.”
Walker said the rest of the clip shouldn’t have been taken too seriously, either.
“And the rest of the kids, when they were like, ‘Don’t take your shirt off’ and all that, they put microphones in front of drunk college students at 4 AM. Like, those guys weren’t ready for primetime. I didn’t see that as those kids really insulting Pat McAfee,” Walker said.
Still, Walker acknowledged that McAfee is entitled to his feelings.
“Again, I think Pat McAfee is great. I just, I don’t know what made him uncomfortable, if it was more than that or if it was just the video. And he’s got a right to feel however he wants to feel,” Walker said.
“I think Pat’s awesome. I think he, I think he might have missed on the reaction to this one, but I wasn’t there, so I don’t know,” he added.
Needless to say, McAfee probably won’t be heading back to Salt Lake City anytime soon.
