Raiders’ Klint Kubiak Reveals Final Decision on Fernando Mendoza’s Week 8 Status

The Las Vegas Raiders had one of the hottest starts in the 2026 NFL season, but that seems like a distant memory. After winning three games in a row to begin their campaign, Kirk Cousins and company have gone winless in four straight games, going from 3-0 to 3-4.

As their losses piled up, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos passed by them in the AFC West Division standings. The Chiefs now lead the division after seven weeks with a 5-1 record, while the Broncos are second at 5-2. Only the winless (0-6) Los Angeles Chargers have a worse record than Las Vegas among AFC West teams.
This rough stretch for the Raiders begs the question of whether the team should make a big switch under center, which is to go from Cousins to rookie signal-caller Fernando Mendoza.
Raiders Rookie Mendoza’s Time Will Come, But Not in Week 8

“Fernando [Mendoza] is gonna play at some point, it’s not gonna be this week,” Kubiak told reporters on Monday, via NFL on ESPN.

Mendoza, the top overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, has seen action in only one game thus far in the 2026 regular season, and that was in a blowout loss to the New England Patriots on the road in Week 5.
The former Indiana Hoosiers star quarterback will eventually get the keys to Las Vegas’ offense, but for now, the team will continue to ride with the veteran Cousins.
