More than 4,000 residents were displaced on Sunday after the authorities in Assam’s Dhubri district demolished the homes of over 640 Bengali Muslim families during an eviction drive, officials told Scroll.
The demolition took place on 650 bighas of government-owned land in Alamganj Part-IX village.
Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath told Scroll that eviction notices had been served to residents occupying 800 bighas of land. However, the drive was not carried out on the remaining 150 bighas because of pending court cases.
“The land would be handed over to the industrial department which has been looking for land for an industrial park for the last two years,” Nath said. “But the further decision would be taken by the government.”
He claimed that residents had settled on the government land in different phases, with some arriving five years ago and others a decade ago. “Most of them have land in other places,” he alleged.
However, residents have disputed this claim.
Videos circulating on social media over the past few days showed residents dismantling their homes and moving their belongings ahead of the demolition drive.
