The New York Mets have plenty of difficult decisions ahead as they attempt to regroup following another disappointing season.

With questions surrounding the roster, potential free-agent additions and the possibility of significant changes before Opening Day, the coming weeks could prove pivotal for the franchise, all with the cloud of a looming labor lockout ahead.

“With free agency set to begin soon, there’s every reason to believe there will be a spending frenzy over the next month with the lockout looming on Dec. 1 when the CBA expires,” Danny Abriano wrote for SNY. “So the Mets, and every other team, could be in a race to that theoretical deadline.”

While New York prepares for that potentially chaotic stretch, the organization received an update on a former pitcher castoff who recently found himself on the wrong side of a significant roster decision by a National League East division rival.

New York Mets Castoff Outrighted By Division Rival After Elbow Surgery

Former Mets right-hander Tyler Zuber has been outrighted by the Miami Marlins, shortly after suffering an injury that could cost him the entire 2027 campaign.

“Marlins sent RHP Tyler Zuber, RHP Zach Brzykcy, RHP Wikelman Gonzalez, C Brian Navarreto and C Logan Driscoll outright to Triple-A Jacksonville,” Matthew Pouliot reported for NBC Sports. “Zuber recently underwent internal brace surgery that could keep him out for all of next year.”

The decision represents another setback for Zuber, who had been working to establish himself as a reliable major-league relief option. The 31-year-old previously spent time with the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays before making his way to Queens for a brief stint last year.

The Rays traded him to the Mets in July 2024 and he made just one major-league appearance for New York before being placed on waivers and moving on to Miami.

Zuber’s departure comes after he received a more substantial opportunity with the Marlins than he had previously enjoyed in the majors.

“Miami selected Zuber to the club in June,” Charlie Wright wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “He remained in the big-league bullpen until the elbow injury. It marked his longest look in the majors. Zuber finished with a 5.67 ERA over 44 appearances, though there were positive indicators. He slashed his walk rate to 6.3%, easily his lowest mark in five seasons as a big leaguer.”

That improved control offered some encouragement despite the disappointing overall results. Unfortunately, the elbow injury and subsequent surgery have significantly complicated his outlook.

With a lengthy rehabilitation potentially awaiting him, Zuber faces an uncertain path back to the major leagues. Meanwhile, the Mets will continue preparing for an offseason in which their own roster decisions could have considerably greater implications for the franchise’s immediate future.
