The New York Mets are hoping to have a much better season in 2027 after falling well short of making the playoffs in 2026. It was a disappointing campaign, to say the least, and one the organization would like to put behind it.
New York is expected to make some major moves in free agency, and starting pitching could be its biggest area of need.
“The Mets need starting pitching. They've needed it for several years now. In 2025, their depth evaporated down the stretch, so they missed the playoffs. In 2026, their depth imploded early, so they never recovered. To make the playoffs in 2027, they will need more of it. Exactly what they have, and therefore what they need, is in the eye of the beholder. But a few things are indisputable: Nolan McLean looks like a No. 1,” SNY’s Chelsea Janes wrote.
The Mets could make a major splash this offseason, and Fox Sports believes they have a chance to sign Tarik Skubal.
“The top payroll in Major League Baseball earned a last-place finish in its division. In summation: The New York Mets need a major boost, pronto, and Skubal would emphatically fill a years-long void. Skubal would become New York's undisputed ace. He offers a potent left-hander who posts strikeouts at a high rate, can pitch deep into games and does so while consistently throwing four pitches (four-seamer, changeup, sinker and slider), with a curveball mixed in every here and there,” Fox Sports wrote.
The biggest concern, however, is that the two-time Cy Young Award winner reportedly enjoyed his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers this season.
“The sense I get from people that he has talked to, is that he would love to be a Los Angeles Dodger. He loved his time in LA. I think it's a perfect marriage in LA," MLB insider Bowden said.
The harsh reality is that there might not be an opportunity for Skubal to join the Dodgers if a rule is put in place that prevents such a move. That could leave the left-hander waiting a while before deciding where he wants to sign.
Skubal played on a $32 million contract this season. If the Mets have a realistic shot at landing the left-handed ace, there is no doubt they will put all their chips on the table. Adding a pitcher of his caliber would bring some serious excitement back to the organization.
