The New York Mets have added infield depth via free agency.

The shortstop/third baseman finished last year in New York's organization at Triple-A Syracuse and began the season with the Philadelphia Phillies.

According to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, the Mets have agreed to a major league contract with Christian Cairo.

"The Mets have signed infielder Christian Cairo to a one-year split contract. Spent most of 2026 at Triple-A with the Phillies but ended the season at Syracuse following a late waiver claim," DiComo wrote on X.

The 25-year-old is the son of former Major League infielder Miguel Cairo, who played for nine teams in 17 seasons from 1996-2012.

Last year, Cairo hit .230/.381/.300 with four home runs, 36 RBIs, and posted a .681 OPS in 130 games at the Triple-A level.

One hundred twenty-eight of those games were played with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the Phillies system.

"Cairo posted a .676 OPS in 128 games at Lehigh Valley. He had an impressive 90 walks to 76 strikeouts over 516 plate appearances," Charlie Wright of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "He also stole 25 bases for the third straight season."

Cairo will likely join the Mets in spring training and compete for an Opening Day roster spot.

He can play second base, shortstop, and third base, and has spent time at all three outfield positions in the minors.
