Planned as India’s first automated pod taxi network, the project, officially termed the Automated Rapid Transit System (ARTS), will run along an approximately 8–9 km elevated corridor connecting Bandra and Kurla stations via BKC. The system will feature around 38 stations in its first phase, ensuring dense coverage across key business zones, offices and transit points.

The project comes at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,016 crore and is being implemented on a public-private partnership model by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is spearheading several major infrastructure upgrades across the city.

At the core of this transformation are driverless, electric pods that can carry up to six passengers each and operate on demand. Unlike traditional public transport, these pods will not follow fixed schedules but will be available every 15–30 seconds, drastically reducing waiting time. With speeds of up to 40 kmph and direct point-to-point connectivity, commuters will be able to bypass traffic congestion entirely, majorly cutting travel time between railway stations and office complexes.

Currently, reaching Bandra-Kurla Complex from Bandra or Kurla stations can take up to 45 minutes during peak hours due to heavy congestion. The pod taxi system is expected to ease this bottleneck by shifting a substantial share of last-mile traffic from roads to elevated tracks, thereby decongesting key arterial routes and improving overall traffic flow in the area.

Officials estimate that the system could handle up to 20,000 passengers per hour, offering a reliable and eco-friendly alternative powered entirely by electricity. In the long term, the network is expected to expand further, integrating seamlessly with metro lines, suburban railways and the upcoming high-speed rail corridor, turning BKC into a model of multi-modal urban connectivity.
