For nearly three years, a 2.5‑kilometre stretch of Gorai Beach in Borivali West remained without streetlights after sunset, leaving the popular shoreline enveloped in darkness. Despite attracting thousands of visitors daily, the absence of lighting raised serious concerns around safety, restricted mobility, and limited night‑time patrolling—curtailing public access to the beach during evening hours.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had long been concerned about the situation. Their attempts to install streetlights proved unsustainable, as the uneven mix of rocky and sandy terrain, coupled with high salinity conditions, led to rapid corrosion of streetlight poles and underground cabling, rendering conventional infrastructure solutions ineffective.
Addressing this long‑standing civic challenge, Adani Electricity’s Mira–Bhayander Division, in close coordination with the BMC, adopted a solution‑oriented approach to restore lighting along the beach. By combining engineering innovation with precise on‑ground execution, the team successfully illuminated the entire stretch—transforming it into a safe, accessible, and visitor‑friendly public space.
Solving a Complex Coastal Infrastructure Challenge
Implementing streetlight infrastructure along Gorai Beach posed multiple challenges. The irregular terrain made standard pole installation impractical, while continuous exposure to saline air significantly increased corrosion risks. Additionally, the absence of service roads restricted the use of heavy machinery, complicating both installation and long‑term maintenance.
Recognising these constraints, Adani Electricity worked closely with the BMC to design a customised and durable lighting solution suited to the coastal environment.
Innovative Engineering Made the Difference
To overcome these challenges, Adani Electricity adopted a specialised, site‑specific approach that included:
Use of HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) pipe sleeves and reinforced concrete foundations to protect poles from corrosion
Installation of HDPE ducts to shield underground cables from saline exposure
Creation of multiple earthing points using advanced insulated cabling instead of conventional methods
Deployment of 5.25‑metre poles with specially designed brackets to ensure uniform illumination across uneven terrain
Design of a ladder‑based maintenance system, eliminating dependence on heavy equipment
Through these interventions, 90 streetlight poles were installed, successfully illuminating the entire 2.5‑kilometre stretch of Gorai Beach.
From Darkness to a Safer, Vibrant Public Space
Today, Gorai Beach stands transformed. The once dark shoreline is now well lit, significantly improving visibility, enabling safer movement for visitors, and supporting more effective surveillance and patrolling. The renewed lighting has restored evening access to the beach, benefiting both visitors and the local community.
Welcoming the development, Mr. Rossi D’Souza, Sarpanch, Gorai Gaothan Panchayat, said: “For years, residents and visitors raised concerns about safety along this stretch of Gorai Beach after sunset. The absence of lighting affected movement and livelihoods linked to evening footfall. The illumination of this entire coastline is a long‑awaited and welcome development for our community.”
Mr. Dsouza further added, “We appreciate Adani Electricity’ and BMC’s commitment to solving a real on‑ground challenge through thoughtful engineering and sustainable execution. This project has enhanced safety and restored confidence among locals and visitors alike.”
An Adani Electricity spokesperson said, “Gorai Beach remained unlit for several years due to the complexity of the terrain and harsh environmental conditions. Working closely with the BMC, our focus was to develop a durable and practical solution that could withstand coastal challenges.”
