Kentucky Wesleyan baseball built through adversity

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — It’s been an uphill climb over the years, but Kentucky Wesleyan baseball is finally back in the NCAA Division II tournament.
The last time the Panthers punched their ticket to the tournament was in 2017. Kentucky Wesleyan won the Great Midwest Conference tournament to claim the G-MAC automatic bid. But no team has shown the will to win the way this year’s team has done.

All throughout the G-MAC tournament, the Panthers trailed by three or more runs and every time they completed the comeback and won the game.
“We built that throughout the year,” said head coach Todd Lillpop. “There’s games that we were down and we won throughout the year not to this extent obviously. But they were so dialed in that every inning they were like this is where we want to be, this is where we want to be. And you can just feel it in the dugout, and it’s special. Like I tell people all the time, the run we made to come back in four games down three or more runs in every game that doesn’t happen all the time, and that’s really really hard to do. So it made it even more special, I mean obviously I’d love to win the game a little bit easier, but as a coach you’re just proud.”
The eight seed Panthers will take on the top seed, Grand Valley State Thursday, May 14th, in Allendale, Michigan at 1 p.m.
