New York is hoping to host a Winter Olympics to make more Miracles on Ice.
State officials are piecing together a bid to host a future games, according to The Athletic. They are hoping to create sports memories for future generations like how Kathy Hochuli and the rest of the nation have nostalgia around the United States hockey team's legendary upset of the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

“I’ve actually been having significant meetings on this, putting together the individuals who I would want to be part of a committee," the New York governor told the publication. "It’s complicated, but we are up for it. As someone who will never forget the 1980 Olympics, I was in college when the Miracle on Ice occurred.
“I was actually working behind the counter in the pizzeria, listening to it on the radio and announcing to all the restaurant patrons what was happening play-by-play. I’ve been there many times. To me, it is a shrine to the perseverance of American athletes at that time that we still have with us today."
The plan is to create a bid for New York City to co-host the Winter Olympics with Lake Placid, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1980 and 1932. This comes after Milan and Cortina hosted the 2026 competition earlier this year. It was the first time two cities co-hosted the Olympics.
In March, Assembly member Robert Carroll wrote an editorial for the USA TODAY Network giving a case for why New York City should host the Winter Olympics. He said that with Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics and Salt Lake City returning as the home for the Winter Olympics in 2034, it is time to give the East Coast some love.
"New York City is home to people from every nation in the world and a center of global media, finance and culture, and yet it has never hosted an Olympic Games," Carroll wrote. "Meanwhile, London, Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles have each hosted multiple times."
He cited the success of the Milan-Cortina games, how Hochuli has kept venues that were used in previous Olympics updated and how the area continues to be included in other major sports events like the World Cup as reasons why The Big Apple is ready to host its first Olympic Games.
The earliest a New York City-Lake Placid Winter Olympics could happen is in 2042. The 2030 Games will be held in the French Alps, Salt Lake City will host in 2034 and Switzerland is expected to lock in the 2038 competition.
