đ„GAME OF THE DAY
The Chariho softball team just found out that winning your first state title wonât be an easy task.
Tuesdayâs first round game was supposed to be a walk in the park for the second-seeded Chargers, but No. 10 Pilgrim made it anything but. A pitchers duel broke out and Chariho got late-game heroics from Anna Tretton, who hit a two-out single in the seventh to give the Chargers a 2-1 walk-off win over the Patriots.
Chariho went undefeated this spring, winning 20 games relatively drama free. With the best pitcher in the state in Adriana Jeannenot and a lineup thatâs produced all season, a first-round win at home seemed to be a lock.
Pilgrim didnât drive to Wood River Junction intending on rolling over. The Patriots struck first in the top of the third after Lia Wasilewksi opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a bunt by Abigail Bryson.
Chariho didnât led the deficit last. The Chargers answered in the bottom half of the third after picking up two walks, then getting an RBI single from Tretton.
The rest of the game â and the entire game â was dominated by Jeannenot and the combination of Pilgrimâs Gretchen Dombeck and Gabriella Santiago.
Tied at 1 going to the bottom of the seventh, Maddie Dorgan drew a two-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a passed back, then scored on Trettonâs single.
Tretton was the offensive star for Chariho with two hits and two RBI. Jeannenot threw seven innings of four-hit ball, striking out four. The Chargers move on to the winnersâ bracket semifinal and will play the winner of Wednesdayâs game between No. 6 Westerly and No. 3 Cranston West.
Dombeck threw four innings of three-hit ball with one walk and two strikeouts. Santiago threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and two runs with three walks while striking out five. The Patriots will play the loser of Wednesdayâs game between No. 6 Westerly and No. 3 Cranston West.

Hallene finished with a complete game, allowing one earned run on seven hits with six strikeouts to just two walks.
Enright, Renaud and Max Pawlik, forever known now as the unsung heroes, combined for five of East Providenceâs eight hits. Enright, along with the winning triple, doubled in the second inning and Pawlik smacked a two-bagger in the sixth.
