Big takeaways from Steelers voluntary OTAs

· Yahoo Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up voluntary OTAs last week and will now transition straight into mandatory workouts this week on June 2. We are inching closer to real football but there was still plenty to learn from voluntary workouts as well. Here are our big takeaways from the first round of OTAs.

Aaron Rodgers showed up

This week's workouts were the ones we predicted quarterback Aaron Rodgers would show up for, but he surprised everyone by not only signing sooner than last season but also participating in voluntary workouts.

Dueling young quarterbacks

The battle between Will Howard and Drew Allar is full speed ahead and by all accounts, Howard has the early edge over the rookie as the Steelers coaches try to rebuild Allar's footwork.

Jaylen Warren is changing his game

Incumbent starting running back Jaylen Warren showed up at training camp lighter and more explosive, knowing he's in a battle for reps with Rico Dowdle.

Rookie wide receivers look good

We fully expected Germie Bernard to come in and integrate into the offense well but fellow rookie receiver Kaden Wetjen has looked solid in receiver drills and might provide more value than just in the return game.

Big changes on the offensive line

In response to the loss of guard Isaac Seumalo and the injury to offensive tackle Broderick Jones, the Steelers flipped last year's starting right side to the left side to integrate new starters Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook into the lineup.

New defensive scheme coming together nicely

New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has said he plans to play even more nickel defense and is using more two-high in the secondary. This is a huge change over what former head coach Mike Tomlin did and could be the move that puts this defensive over the top.

Changing roles for Jalen Ramsey

Last season, defensive back Jalen Ramasey bailed out the defense when he moved to safety after the DeShon Elliott injury. This season, the Steelers coaching staff plans to use Ramsey in a dual role as the team's nickel cornerback and sub-package linebacker.
