The time has come again to vote for The Star Press East Central Indiana high school Athlete of the Week, brought to you by IU Health.

The reigning Athlete of the Week is Delta girls track athlete Shiloh Bunch. Bunch became a sectional champion in the 800-meter (2:24.18) and 1,600-meter (5:13.72) runs on Tuesday, May 19. She also helped Delta win the 4x400 (4:09.02) and the team sectional championship. Bunch received 4,926 out of 10,653 votes cast (46.24%).

This week's poll brings us 10 more nominees who had standout performances during the week of Tuesday, May 26 to Tuesday, June 2. The schedule for this week's poll has been altered in order to fit the top performers from baseball sectional championships and softball regionals. To submit nominees for future polls, please email names and any notable statistics or accomplishments to [email protected].

The poll will remain open until Sunday, June 7, at noon. You may vote as many times as you'd like. Please vote using the poll found by scrolling to the bottom of this page — votes submitted via email will not be counted.

Here's a quick look at this week's nominees:

  • Reese Backus, Delta girls track and field: Backus was the only girls track and field athlete in the East Central Indiana area to become a state finals qualifier in multiple events. She placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.41 seconds and won the long jump regional title with a distance of 18-4 feet at the Carroll (Fort Wayne) regional on Tuesday, May 26.
  • Kinlie Lester, Monroe Central girls track and field: Lester broke a 19-year-old school record with a long jump distance of 17-6 feet at the Carroll (Fort Wayne) regional on Tuesday, May 26, and qualified for state finals with a third-place finish in the event.
  • Caroline Wallace, Yorktown girls track and field: Wallace qualified for state finals in the 100-meter dash with a third-place finish at the Carroll (Fort Wayne) regional on Tuesday, May 26. Her time of 12.36 seconds broke her own school record, which she had set one week before at sectional.
  • Carter Campbell, Winchester boys track and field: Campbell qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles after an all-state finish in the event last year. He finished fourth at the Carroll (Fort Wayne) regional on Thursday, May 28, but still qualified by running under the IHSAA state standard time, finishing in 38.60 seconds.
  • Lucas Eaton, New Castle boys track and field: Eaton, ranked fourth in the state in the high jump, won the regional title at Greenfield-Central on Thursday, May 28, by clearing the bar at a height of 6-8 feet — an inch short of his 6-9 personal record.
  • Grady Mahaffey, Wapahani boys track and field: Mahaffey brought home the high jump title from the Carroll (Fort Wayne) regional on Thursday, May 28, with a personal record height of 6-6 feet.
  • Olivia Jaromin, Yorktown softball: Jaromin had a monstrous sectional week to lead the Tigers to a fifth-straight sectional title. She hit a go-ahead solo home run in an 8-2 semifinal victory against Jay County on Thursday, May 28, then went 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of two-run homers in a 10-0 championship victory over Hamilton Heights on Saturday, May 30. Jaromin also logged Yorktown's only hit in a 1-0 regional championship loss to Logansport on Tuesday, June 2.
  • Taylor Young, Cowan softball: Young came up big at the plate for the Blackhawks to lead them to their fifth sectional title in the last six years. She was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs in a 6-1 semifinal victory over Daleville on Thursday, May 28, then followed that up with a 3-for-4, five-RBI performance in a 15-0 sectional championship win over Liberty Christian on Friday, May 29.
  • Maddox Huffman, Delta baseball: Huffman had a strong day at the plate as Delta defeated Hamilton Heights, 11-2, and Connersville, 4-3, on Monday, June 1, to clinch a third consecutive sectional title. He went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs against Hamilton Heights, then went 1-for-3 with another RBI against Connersville. He also pitched the final three innings against Connersville and closed out the win for the Eagles with four strikeouts.
  • Caleb Luedike, Monroe Central baseball: Luedike put together an elite two-way performance in Monroe Central's 16-1 sectional championship victory over Cambridge City Lincoln on Monday, June 1. He went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in one RBI. Luedike was even better on the mound. giving up one unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine to lead the Golden Bears to their first sectional title in 12 years.
