The last time the two nations met at a World Cup was in the tournament’s opening match in South Africa in 2010, which ended in a memorable 1-1 draw.
While Mexico have gone on to qualify for every World Cup since then, Bafana Bafana are making their first appearance on football’s biggest stage since hosting the tournament 16 years ago.
Hugo Broos’ side also face a stern test, having not played a team ranked inside FIFA’s top 20 since their clash against Morocco in 2024.
Here are three Mexican players Bafana Bafana will need to keep a close eye on:
Gilberto Mora
Mexican supporters have been raving about 17-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora, who is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents the country has produced in recent years.
The Club Tijuana attacker is tipped to be one of the breakout stars of this World Cup after making history in Liga MX.
On 31 August, Mora scored in Tijuana’s 2-1 victory over León, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of Mexico’s top flight at just 15 years and 320 days old.
His creativity, confidence and fearlessness make him a dangerous weapon in the final third.
Mexico’s attack force can hurt Bafana
Julián Quiñones
At 29, Julián Quiñones is one of Mexico’s most experienced attacking threats.
The striker has been prolific in the Saudi Pro League, scoring goals consistently at club level, although he has yet to fully replicate that form for the national team.
Nonetheless, Quiñones is expected to start against Bafana and possesses the pace, movement and finishing ability to cause serious problems if South Africa’s defence gives him any space.
Johan Vásquez
Defender Johan Vásquez provides stability and leadership at the heart of Mexico’s backline.
The 28-year-old centre-back is known for his strong tackling, composure on the ball and ability to play accurate passes from defence.
Forwards such as Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng and Lyle Foster will need to be at their sharpest to find a way past a defence marshalled by Vásquez.
Often underrated outside Mexico, the experienced defender remains one of the key figures in the national team and could play a crucial role in keeping Bafana’s attack quiet.
