The Westfalenstadion may be quiet for the summer, but the spirit of Borussia is echoing loudly across the global stage.

The first weekend of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is in the books! And with that provides an opportunity for us to look back at our boys in black and yellow, to see how they performed for their respective countries over the past few days. All stats below are courtesy of Fotmob.

Switzerland 1 – 1 Qatar, Sat. June 13th

  • Gregor Kobel (GK)
    • Minutes played: 90
    • Saves: 3
    • Goals conceded: 1
    • Accurate passes: 16/18 (89%)
    • Game highlights:
      • 3rd minute – outstanding 1v1 save against Edmilson Junior after former Dortmund great, Manuel Akanji let the ball go through his legs for Edmilson to run on to.
      • 43rd minute – kick save against Edmilson
      • 94th minute (GOAL) – Qatar snatched a point courtesy of Boualem Khoukhi’s missile of a goal in the top right corner. Nothing Kobel could do.
    • Performance:
      • Switzerland have to feel that they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Yes it’s only a tie, but if you read into expected goals (xG), Qatar only had 0.60 (6 shots, 3 on target) vs. Switzerland’s 3.20 (26 shots, 7 on target). The rating is more of an indictment on Switzerland as a whole, rather than Kobel. Minus the one goal that he allowed, the few chances that Qatar had he was able to quell.
    • Rating: 8/10

Germany 7 – 1 Curacao, Sun. June 14th

  • Felix Nmecha (CM)
    • Minutes played: 73
    • Goals: 1
    • Accurate passes: 38/40
    • Shots on target: 3
    • Tackles: 3
    • Game highlights:
      • 6th minute (GOAL) – great one-two with Florian Wirtz tucking a beautiful curling effort into the right corner of the goal.
      • 8th minute – 25 yard strike from outside the box that went narrowly wide.
      • 47th minute – earned a penalty kick for Germany after receiving the ball around the pk spot, and danced through before being tripped up from Curacao’s Riechedly Bazoer
    • Performance:
      • Nmecha was involved offensively, early and often. Aside from the goal that he scored and the one that he earned via the pk, he also took the joint-most shots (4) of the game, along with Florian Wirtz. Germany might be chasing the trophy, but it’s the Dortmund engine room driving the machine.
    • Rating: 9/10
  • Nico Schlotterbeck (CB)
    • Minutes played: 90
    • Goals: 1
    • Shots on target: 2
    • Accurate passes: 73/85
    • Tackles: 2
    • Interceptions: 3
    • Game highlights:
      • 27th minute – his powerful header from the corner was on target but tipped over the bar
      • 37th minute (GOAL) – 10 minutes later his glancing header was accurately placed in the bottom left corner.
    • Performance:
      • Dortmund’s center-back scored Germany’s second goal in the 38th minute with a great header off a corner kick, and distributed the ball well from the back and actually had the most touches of any player, with 102. He did have a shaky moment in the 21st minute, missing a couple of chances to clear the ball, which led to Curaçao scoring their only goal of the match. However, he still had a strong overall performance.
    • Rating: 8/10.
  • Waldemar Anton (DEF)
    • Minutes played: 8+
    • Accurate passes: 6/7
    • Tackles: 2
    • Performance:
      • Subbed on in the 82nd minute for Joshua Kimmich. Anton didn’t play many minutes but was consistent and reliable when called upon – similar to his club season – this time at right back. He won both his ground duels and completed nearly all of his passes. But given that he only played a select few minutes, it doesn’t seem fair to give him a rating.
    • Rating: N/A.
  • Maximilian Beier (Mid)
    • Did not play

Sweden 5 – 1 Tunisia, Sun. June 14th

  • Daniel Svensson (DEF)
    • Minutes played: Stoppage time
    • Rating: N/A
