Jalen Carter's future with the Philadelphia Eagles has never felt uncertain. The timeline, however, might be. For months, many have assumed he would eventually become the latest homegrown star to land a massive contract extension.

The organization has long built its reputation for identifying cornerstone players early and rewarding them before the market forces prices even higher. That's why one recent observation from NFL insider Albert Breer caught attention.
Albert Breer makes a bold statement about Jalen Carter
In a recent 'mailbag' bearing Breer's name, he was asked whether the Eagles were hesitant to extend Carter and offered a direct response. The answer raises eyebrows.
"The answer is yes. They are hesitant to pay him."
Whether fans agree with that assessment or not, Breer's reasoning deserves consideration. Philadelphia's actions speak loudly. The Eagles have rarely been shy about rewarding their own players. General manager Howie Roseman has repeatedly shown a willingness to strike early on extension talks. The philosophy is simple. The sooner a deal gets done, the less expensive it often becomes. Philadelphia has followed that blueprint with numerous cornerstone players over the years.
That is why Carter's situation feels different. Breer expresses that.
"The fact that we’re into June without Jalen Carter having a deal is notable, and I’d guess if they do one now, before his fourth season as a pro, then it’d come with flexibility for the team. If Carter won’t give them that flexibility now, maybe he’ll just wait another year. Which would make this a little like the George Pickens situation in Dallas, where a team might want to see a little more from a player, just from a character perspective, before committing long term."
Philadelphia exercised Carter's fifth-year option, ensuring he remains under team control through the 2028 season. That decision bought Philadelphia additional time and removed any immediate pressure to negotiate.
Perhaps that's all this is. Or perhaps the Eagles want more information before committing hundreds of millions of dollars. Let's be clear. The talent isn't the issue. No one questions Carter's ability. The former Georgia Bulldogs star has already established himself as one of the NFL's premier young defensive tackles.
He is a two-time Pro Bowler, an All-Pro talent, and one of the foundational pieces of Philadelphia's defense. If contract negotiations were based solely on production, there likely wouldn't be much to discuss. Carter is exactly the type of player teams spend years trying to find.
That's why Breer's comments are noteworthy. His theory centers less on performance and more on comfort level. He compared the situation to teams wanting additional reassurance before making a long-term commitment, particularly when there are off-field considerations or maturity-related questions they still want answered.
Time isn't necessarily completely on Philadelphia's side. The fifth-year option provides flexibility. Carter remains under contract. Philadelphia can continue gathering information while allowing the young defensive tackle to further strengthen his case. That strategy has advantages, but the longer the Eagles wait, the higher the proce becomes.
If Carter continues ascending, the Eagles will eventually write a massive check with confidence. If they feel additional evaluation is necessary, they have created the runway needed to do so. Either way, nothing about the current situation suggests Philadelphia is preparing to move on from one of its best young players.
The more likely outcome remains the one most have expected all along. At some point, Carter will get paid. The only question is whether the Eagles believe that moment should come now or after another season of evidence convinces them to remove any remaining hesitation.
