Pittsburgh made the playoffs this past season and with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin getting near the end of their careers, the Penguins are hoping for another Stanley Cup run.
So, ahead of the offseason really kicking off at the NHL Draft on Friday, the Penguins could be aggressive in adding more talent to their roster. Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic believes Pittsburgh could have some interest in trading for Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson.
“Dubas could go “big-game hunting,” as one member of the organization told me that the Penguins GM is eagerly hoping to do this summer,” Yohe wrote in an article published on Wednesday. “That person, as with other unnamed sources in this story, requested anonymity to discuss internal matters.
“It’s fairly well known that he fancies Jason Robertson. He’d be willing and able to pay him big money. Sure, there would be a hefty acquisition price, but you have to give something to get something. Robertson would be an immediate help for Crosby and would also be a foundational player even after the captain retires.”
Robertson is an RFA, so he would need a new contract, which would be expensive, but he would bolster the Penguins' offense and make them that much better.
Robertson recorded 45 goals and 51 assists for 96 points in 82 games last season. His career high is 46 goals and 109 points, which he accomplished in the 2022-23 season.
The Stars are likely to move Robertson, and the Penguins could be a landing spot for him.
