That makes the mission of the 2026 NBA Draft a simple one for the Mavs, who have a new head coach and front office: Build around Flagg.
Flagg won Rookie of the Year and proved he's going to be a potential face of the franchise.
These upcoming draft picks will be about giving him players on the same timeline as him to grow together and hopefully win together.
Below, we'll be keeping track of how the Mavericks do during the two nights of the draft.

Who did the Mavs draft?
The Mavericks are making these picks:
- Round 1, Pick 9: Morez Johnson Jr. (Michigan)

- Round 2, Pick 48: Tobi Lawal (Virginia Tech)

Dallas Mavericks NBA Draft grades
These are how Sporting News grades each of the Mavs' draft picks:
- Round 1, Pick 9: Morez Johnson Jr. - C
- He reunites with Dusty May, but was he even the best Michigan player available at this spot? Johnson is an impactful player in the frontcourt, but it'll be interesting to see how he fits with Cooper Flagg. He'll have to be defensively impactful to reach his ceiling.
- Round 1, Pick 30: Koa Peat - traded
- Peat ends up being traded. The Mavs end up with the guy taken 25th, Sergio De Larrea out of Spain. He'll likely be stashed, but in the long run, he's a great shooter.
- Round 2, Pick 48: Tobi Lawal - B+
- An athletic freak, he could have a dunk contest with Cooper Flagg. If he gets his skills going, he can be an impact bench piece.
- Round 2, Pick 56: Vsevolod Ischenko - C
- A clear draft-and-stash, the Mavs must believe in this player, but not much is known about the 6-foot-8 wing.
Dallas Mavericks NBA Draft updates, trades
