Celtics re-sign Ron Harper Jr. to new deal after declining option

The Celtics are bringing back a key contributor on a new extended contract. Boston is signing Ron Harper Jr. to a three-year deal worth $9 million, sources confirmed to MassLive.

Boston had a team option on Harper Jr. for next season worth $2.6 million. But the Celtics elected to decline that option and lock up the wing to a long-term deal. Harper is entering his fifth season in the league after enjoying a breakout season with the Celtics.

The 26-year-old appeared in 29 games for Boston last season, largely on a two-way contract before being promoted to the standard roster in April ahead of the playoffs. He averaged 4.0 points and 1.7 rebounds in 11 minutes per game while shooting 41.8% from the field and 35.0% from 3-point range.

Harper was a pleasant surprise for the Celtics this past season, getting some rotation minutes later in the year. He had some big-time games, including a 22-point game against the Spurs and his brother, Dylan Harper. He ended the regular season on a high, putting up 27 points in the win over the Magic to spoil Orlando’s seeding. Harper also started the Celtics’ Game 7 loss against the Sixers in the first round of the playoffs.

“It’s just been really rewarding, knowing that the time I’m putting in, the effort that I’m putting in doesn’t go unnoticed in the building,” Harper said after the win over the Magic. “By my teammates, my coaching staff, the front office. Just being able to come back to Boston, earn a roster spot and be a part of a great organization. I feel like that’s paid dividends for me in my career. I’m just really grateful to be in this situation.”

Harper started his career with the Raptors on a two-way contract, where he played for two seasons from 2022-24 and played in 10 total games. He originally joined the C’s organization during training camp in 2024 before landing with the Maine Celtics in the G League. But the Pistons signed him to a two-way contract in January 2025.

Harper made his way back to the Celtics for training camp ahead of the 2025-26 season. He was promoted to a two-way spot ahead of the season, where he spent time once again with the Maine Celtics.

Now, he’s back on the standard roster and is expected to be a contributor for the C’s. Harper will provide extra depth on the wing alongside other young Boston forwards like Jordan Walsh, Baylor Scheierman and Hugo Gonzalez. Boston currently has 14 players under contract but several of those deals are non-guaranteed.
