LeBron James’ decision to leave the Lakers this summer might have real consequences for Bronny to deal with as he remains with the franchise.
But LeBron’s free agency decision might give the Lakers a potential path to extracting value for Bronny before committing to another developmental season under JJ Redick.
Bronny James’ future with the Lakers remains uncertain until LeBron’s decision
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin discussed Bronny’s future after the Lakers’ frenetic offseason moves on Wednesday. Bronny remains in LA despite LeBron’s intent to leave, but it seems the Lakers might revisit Bronny’s future after LeBron decides on his next team.
“We’ll see. Bronny James’ $2.3 million contract for next season became fully guaranteed Monday night when the Lakers opted not to waive him by his contract deadline… It’s easy to think the James family would want that connection to continue.”

However, given the on-court strides Bronny made last season, there’s a chance the Lakers retain him regardless to continue his development under head coach JJ Redick.
Bronny James is still proving he can be an NBA player
Bronny has been in the league for two seasons, averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 assists over this time.
He made a noticeable improvement last season and became a fringe rotational player at times, including the 2026 NBA Playoffs, with a standout performance in Game 4 with five points and four assists in 15 minutes.
There are developmental gains to be extracted as Bronny is a high-effort three-and-D guard. However, he likely will peak as an undersized role player, which is why the Lakers would be interested in a potential trade return for him if LeBron demands his new team acquire his son.
