Matthew Stafford ranked among top 5 QBs by PFF, but just barely

Matthew Stafford was the best quarterback in the NFL last season, which is borderline undeniable considering he was voted the league’s MVP. He led the NFL in touchdown passes and passing yards, operating at a different level than every other quarterback with his accuracy to all levels of the field.

Heading into 2026, Stafford is another year older, but there’s no reason to think he’ll slow down anytime soon. He remains one of the best quarterbacks in football and could legitimately contend for MVP again.

Pro Football Focus ranked every starting quarterback in the NFL entering this season and Stafford didn’t get much love. He was ranked fifth despite coming off an MVP season, only one spot ahead of Jordan Love.

If these rankings were based solely on 2025 output, Stafford would have a legitimate case for the No. 1 spot. His 91.7 PFF passing grade and 4.49 Wins Above Replacement both led the NFL, with the latter finishing more than a full win clear of second-place Dak Prescott (3.39). He also paced the league with a 7.7% big-time throw rate, a mark that also tied for the 15th-highest single-season mark ever recorded in the PFF era.

That said, the 2025 MVP enters 2026 in one of the NFL's most favorable situations. Rams head coach Sean McVay remains one of football's premier offensive minds, and the Rams' dominant rushing attack consistently forces defenses to respect the run, creating favorable passing opportunities. Stafford has also had the luxury of throwing to Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, giving him one of the league's best wide receiver duos.

PFF noted that Stafford threw just nine total interceptions last season despite having 21 turnover-worthy throws, meaning there were a lot of dropped picks and missed opportunities by defenders against the Rams.

Even though he did have some interception luck last year, he made throws that “few other quarterbacks can,” PFF wrote. The site just has some concerns about a potential uptick in turnovers this season if his luck runs out.

Ranked ahead of Stafford were Patrick Mahomes at No. 4, Lamar Jackson at 3, Joe Burrow second and Josh Allen in the top spot at No. 1.
