Five-time winners Brazil have been knocked out of the World Cup at a relatively early stage once again by Norway and Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes made some unwanted new history in the process.

Following the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti – the manager with the most Champions League titles in history – many had predicted Brazil to end their 24-year wait for a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

They rarely convinced throughout the tournament in all honesty and a 2-1 defeat to an Erling Haaland-inspired Norway in New Jersey does not feel like a huge surprise, despite the names of the teams involved.

It could have all been so different for Brazil, too. They were awarded a penalty in the first half after Kristoffer Ajer had fouled Matheus Cunha in the box, but Guimaraes failed to convert.

In doing so, he did something no Brazilian player has done in 40 years.

Sadly for the Newcastle star, who has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, he became the first Brazil player to miss a penalty at a World Cup (excluding shootouts) since 1986.

A frankly rather weak penalty that saw Guimaraes adopt the increasingly controversial stuttering run up was saved by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

Brazil legend Zico missed his spot-kick against France in the quarter-finals at Mexico ‘86 before his country lost in the shootout.

Ancelotti’s team were awarded another penalty after Haaland had bagged the second of his two goals in New Jersey but it did not prove to be enough for Brazil.

Yet another World Cup has ended in miserable fashion for a team who once defined the competition entirely.

They will now have to wait at least another four years to claim that elusive sixth title.
