Restaurant industry leads Canada in youth job growth in 2026: StatsCan

There is encouraging news for the restaurant and accommodation industry.
A Statistics Canada Labour Force report released on July 10 says the industry has been the biggest net creator of youth jobs of any sector in Canada since the start of the year.
“The numbers are clear — our sector has created more new youth jobs than all other industries combined,” said Kelly Higginson, President and CEO of Restaurants Canada. “As youth unemployment continues to be a major national concern, the restaurant industry continues to play an important role in ensuring young people have the opportunities they need to launch their careers.”
The report says the restaurant industry employed an average of 52,770 more young people during the first half of 2026 than during the same period last year.
The sector employed 543,000 youth in June, a 12% increase from a year earlier. Restaurants account for 85% of employment in the sector. British Columbia saw the largest increase in youth restaurant jobs, adding 16,800 positions, followed by Alberta with 14,000 and Quebec with 10,000.
‘Significant’ labour shortages
Restaurants are the fourth-largest private-sector employer in Canada, employing 1.2 million Canadians. The industry continues to face significant labour shortages across the country, especially in skilled roles that require training such as chefs, cooks and managers.
At the same time, profits remain fragile, with 36% of businesses operating at a loss or just breaking even, making it difficult to invest in hiring and training.
“We are the number one source of first-time jobs in Canada, and that hasn’t changed over the years. One in six youth jobs are in our industry,” added Higginson. “Today’s jobs numbers show that the restaurant industry is positioned to provide young workers the early career training and skills they need to succeed in any sector of their choosing. Governments should invest in us so we can continue to invest in our youth.”
