Last Month for Yankees Has Been Worse Than Anyone Even Realizes

The past month or so for the New York Yankees has been terrible in many ways.

Not only have the Yankees been one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, but they also haven't gotten much help from anybody else. The Boston Red Sox have been one of the better teams in the league, playing as the hottest team before the break by a wide margin. The Detroit Tigers were very good, and even the Minnesota Twins, who have Ryan Jeffers, who the Yankees want, are staying in the mix.
It's a very unfortunate situation for a team that not only struggled before the All-Star break, but also needs a ton of help before the deadline in just a few weeks.
According to the latest from MLB.com, while the Yankees are looking to improve behind the plate, some of these teams that have played better in the past month or so could have a major impact on the Yankees' inability to land the player they so desperately need.
“It’s no secret the Yankees have a major need behind the plate. General manager Brian Cashman didn't beat around the bush when he was asked about the situation recently. Even with Austin Wells homering in consecutive games last week, New York’s backstops have combined for a 46 wRC+ (tied for worst in MLB) this season. Wells himself has a 42 wRC+, second worst among hitters with at least 200 plate appearances in 2026. However, while the Yankees may wish to upgrade at that position prior to the Trade Deadline, their options to do so could be limited,” MLB.com wrote.
I still hope that teams like the Twins understand they don't really have much chance of winning a whole lot. Again, perhaps Minnesota believes it is a lot better than it actually is, but I just don't understand how that would make much sense for the organization at the moment.
It would make a ton more sense for the Twins to move on from guys, though again, that's ultimately the decision they have to make, and I don't think it's crazy to say that with how open the American League is, they might think they have a legitimate chance to compete.
