After the calmest stretch of QB play in recent Illinois memory, a new era has started in Champaign.

Katin Houser is slated to lead the Illini offense this coming fall; yet many don’t know the interesting route that eventually landed him at Gies Memorial Stadium.
Houser will be no stranger to the Big Ten, having played his first two seasons of college ball at Michigan State.
His freshman year in East Lansing resulted in only six snaps, so he elected to redshirt.
Now, in 2026, the senior has no eligibility after this season. However, he’s looking to ride the best year of his college career into this season.
Houser spent the last two seasons at Eastern Carolina, and last season was his undisputed breakout campaign.
As a junior, he threw for 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns while throwing only six interceptions.
NEWS: Former East Carolina quarterback Katin Houser is committing to Illinois, sources tell ESPN. Houser threw for 3,300 yards this year, 19 touchdowns and completed 65.9% of his passes. It seems like Houser was due for a breakout, and last year was exactly that. Now, it’s starting to come full circle for the senior quarterback. Transferring back into the conference he once had to leave.
The Illini’s gunslinger is used to some big-time stages as well. Houser was a national recruit coming out of high school. Ranked as the No. 140 recruit in the class of 2022 by Rivals, and was sought after by some premier programs. Additionally, he was under center at the national powerhouse St. John Bosco in California.
There is no doubt in my mind that Houser never thought he’d end his college career in Champaign; however, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
He has clearly possessed elite talent since high school – he just needed to find a program like Eastern Carolina to hone it.
Now, with only seven weeks until the first kickoff, it’s Houser’s team. He has big shoes to fill after Luke Altmyer’s departure, but I think the senior will do just fine.
After being written off by many following his transfer from the Spartans, he revived his career, and I don’t expect that momentum to stop this year.
