Pat Riley has stayed uncharacteristically quiet on the LeBron James speculation surrounding the Heat this offseason. That changed this week when he finally addressed the questions everyone had been asking him.

James has been the name everyone has been talking about ever since he informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he wouldn’t be returning for the 2026-27 season. He has been heavily linked to a return to the Miami Heat, where he won two championships. But the Cleveland Cavaliers have also been mentioned a possible reunion destination.

Pat Riley Addresses LeBron James Rumors

Riley confirmed that there has been discussions about potentially signing James during free agency, but explains what has been the hold up so far.

“To be transparent about it, we’ve had discussions over a week ago, maybe a week before that about it. But right now, I think we’re like everybody else. Just waiting to see what he does,” Riley said.

Miami’s pitch carries obvious historical weight. Riley brought James to the Heat in 2010 alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, forming a Big Three that reached four straight NBA Finals and won two chips.

There is also a basketball case to be made this time around. The Heat enter this offseason with Giannis Antetokounmpo now in the fold after acquiring him in a blockbuster trade. Miami now has a frontcourt pairing of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo that ranks among the most physically imposing in the league.

Adding James to that mix, even at this stage of his career, would give the Heat a level of star power and playoff experience few teams could match heading into next season.

Beyond the roster, reports have also pointed to Florida’s lack of state income tax and South Beach’s year-round lifestyle as factors working in Miami’s favor if James is weighing similar offers on the court.

For now, Riley is choosing patience over pursuit, at least publicly. His comments suggest Miami has done its part in making its case to James and is simply waiting on the four-time MVP to make up his mind. Every other team in the mix is in the same boat.

James has mentioned multiple times that he would take his time deciding and that his family would be one of the main factors. It’s clear that we’re nearing his decision in the coming weeks, which is sure to break the internet once again.
