India's comeback to ODI cricket was not as successful as hoped as England won the series 2-1 after a run-fest in the decider played at Lord's on Sunday.

While it was the batting strength that made all the difference for England, there have been many takeaways for India in preparation for the ODI world Cup 2027.

Rohit Sharma's comeback to form topped the list, as he put up an authoritative performance with a century, with Shubman Gill continuing to lead as India's ODI skipper. Virat Kohli too seemed to be getting back to his best in the latter part of the series.

Fringe players were given chances in the series, with Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav and Arshdeep Singh forming part of the bowling attack, while Ishan Kishan returned to the XI in the final match.

How India players performed in the ODI series vs England

Rohit Sharma: 9/10

Rohit ended as India's stand-out performer. Amid his retirement rumours and especially after performing poorly in the first two matches with scores of 11 and 26, the seasoned opener produced an impressive 138-run knock off 110 balls at Lord’s even though England eventually won the match.

Shubman Gill: 8.5/10

Gill managed to merge his captaincy duties with consistent performance with the bat. Scores of 80 in the first ODI and 77 in the third ODI highlighted his significance as an opening batter for the Indian team.

Virat Kohli: 8/10

Kohli found his feet in this series after making a fairly anonymous beginning. After getting dismissed early in the first ODI, he delivered two crucial performances, scoring 65 in Cardiff and 74 in Lord's. He seemed to be getting more comfortable batting against the English bowling lineup.

Kohli played better as the series went on.

Shreyas Iyer: 7.5/10

Iyer was one of the more consistent middle-order player India had. His 66 in the second ODI formed the backbone of the Indian innings in Cardiff, even after being pegged down a position with Ishan Kishan coming in at No. 3. His dismissal for a duck in the 3rd ODI lost him the brownies.

KL Rahul: 6/10

Role: Wicketkeeper-batter / Middle-order batter
Matches: 2 | Runs: 13 | Average: 6.5 | Strike rate: 91.66

Rahul was part of both the first and last ODIs of the series, adding experience and stability to India's middle order.

Due to illness, he missed the second ODI; Kishan replaced him for that match. Although Rahul's bat didn't have much to show from the perspective of an experienced finisher, his glovework in the first ODI was solid.

Ishan Kishan: 6/10

Role: Wicketkeeper-batter / Middle-order batter
Matches: 2 | Runs: 15 | Average: 7.5 | Strike rate: 64.58

Kishan was selected in the squad for the second ODI due to the unavailability of Rahul and got to retain his place in the last ODI of the series.

The southpaw had an average series. He underperformed in the second ODI by scoring only 1 run, and was given another chances in the last ODI of the series as India was chasing an enormous total at Lords.

Washington Sundar: 7.5/10

Role: Batting all-rounder / Off-spinner
Matches: 2 | Runs: 54 | Average: 27.00 | Wickets: 0 | Economy: 3.20

Sundar impressed in the first ODI of the series by scoring an important unbeaten 52 that assisted India in successfully chasing their target at Edgbaston. Sundar’s off-spin was helpful for India in the middle overs of that innings.

However, his participation in the series got cut short when he sustained a hamstring injury while batting in the second ODI.

Axar Patel: 7.5/10

Role: Left-arm spinner / Lower-order batter
Matches: 3 | Runs: 60 | Average: 20.00 | Wickets: 5 | Economy: 5.43

Axar came up with another good all-rounder series for India. His unbeaten 57 in the first ODI and the four wickets he took in that match made him one of the most important support players for India. Through bowling nearly the maximum allotted overs, he maintained a respectable economy rate as well.

Shivam Dube: 5.5/10

Role: Middle-order batter / Medium pacer
Matches: 2 | Runs: 0 | Wickets: 2

Dube played in the first two ODI matches, but missed the decisive third match at Lord's.

The all-rounder gave India another option with the ball and the lower order batting ability, yet he failed to impress with both bat and ball. In light of rising competition for the all-rounder's position, Dube needs to perform consistently to cement his spot in the Indian ODI squad.

Jasprit Bumrah: 8/10

Role: Right-arm fast bowler
Matches: 2 | Wickets: 2 | Economy: 3.95

Bumrah continued to be the most economical and consistent fast bowler. Even though he did not take many wickets, his control and the way he could contain the English batters was impressive. It was missed at Lord's when England's batting order had a free hand with the pace attack.

Prasidh Krishna: 7.5/10

Role: Right-arm fast bowler
Matches: 3 | Wickets: 5 | Economy: 5.86

Prasidh was India’s highest wicket-taker at the series. His capacity to generate bounce and maintain consistency in lengths caused trouble for the English batsmen in the series. Even though he bled runs while England attacked, he continued to be India's most consistent strike bowler.

Gurnoor Brar: 7/10

Role: Right-arm fast bowler
Matches: 3 | Wickets: 4 | Economy: 7.73

Brar was one of the talented players for India even if he had a high economy rate overall. After making his debut in the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June, he proved himself to be a wicking-taking threat. However, he could not restrict the run-rate during the aggressive batting by the English openers.

Arshdeep Singh: 5.5/10

Role: Left-arm fast bowler
Matches: 1 | Wickets: 0 | Economy: 7.20

Arshdeep appeared only in the last ODI and had a tough day out as England piled up a massive score in Lord’s. He failed to break the partnership but is an important bowler owing to the angle he bowls from and variations.

Prince Yadav: 6/10

Role: Fast bowler
Matches: 1 | Wickets: 1 | Economy: 7.90

Prince was involved in the final ODI at Lords, and up against England's aggressive batting lineup, the pacer played his part by dismissing Ben Duckett for 141 with a cleverly bowled slower one. Having recently debuted against Afghanistan, the opportunity provided him exposure to quality batters in the ODI format.
