The Kansas City Chiefs’ 176th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, wide receiver Cyrus Allen, is drawing considerable attention from local and national media ahead of training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.
With question marks across the Chiefs’ wide receiver depth chart and Patrick Mahomes in need of more weapons, Allen’s sharp route running and prolific college production have positioned the fifth-round selection as a potential steal. He’s envisioned as a player who could even break the mold for rookie receivers in Andy Reid’s system.
Allen entered the NFL after spending one season at the University of Cincinnati, where he recorded 51 receptions for 674 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. Those 13 scores set a single-season program record at Cincinnati and led the Big 12 Conference, while placing third most in the FBS. He started his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech before transferring to Texas A&M in 2024 and finishing at Cincinnati in 2025, earning an All-Big 12 Second Team selection.

Why the Chiefs needed to find a receiver like Allen in the later rounds
Kansas City knew it had to add weapons for Mahomes, but the defense-heavy first four rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft left the team searching for value deeper in the class. Many believe Allen could be that value find, much like Tyreek Hill was back in 2016.
Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo named Allen one of 10 potential rookie steals who could embarrass every team that passed on them in 2026. Mellow noted that the Chiefs have questions at the slot receiver position. With Rashee Rice returning from injury, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Allen play himself into reps in the slot.
Athlon Sports’ Luke Easterling wrote that Allen was a bargain-type weapon, undersized but explosive, with route-running among the best in this year’s rookie class. Easterling noted that the depth chart is “a mess” at wide receiver in Kansas City, with plenty of promise on paper but significant question marks. That type of environment could allow a player like Allen, with his sharp, smart route-running, to impress enough during training camp to earn Mahomes’ trust when the regular season rolls around.
Local media members see Allen as an exception to the typical Andy Reid rookie wide receiver rule
For a more local perspective, KSHB-TV producer Nick Jacobs recently joined 32 Beat Writers on their podcast to discuss potential fantasy football outlooks for Chiefs players.
“As a route runner, that guy is already there in terms of what the Chiefs need, and I think that’s what’s going to get him on the football field quicker than most rookies,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs has covered the team for several years and is familiar with the fact that coach Andy Reid typically does not play rookie wide receivers, instead having them adjust to his system in their first year. It’s rare that a rookie receiver comes in and immediately makes an impact on the offensive side of the ball. Special teams is a different story, but on offense, it doesn’t always work that way.
The fact that Jacobs sees Allen as a player who already has the skills to ascend the depth chart and contribute as a rookie should be a telling sign of what’s to come.
Allen is already building chemistry with Patrick Mahomes
My own take on Allen is that he is trending in that direction to make an impact during his rookie season. During OTAs and mandatory minicamp, he got a share of the limited repetitions where Mahomes was on the field for 7-on-7 work. That tells me the Chiefs would like for him to be involved and create chemistry with Mahomes before arriving at training camp. They want him to have a foundation to build upon with the starting quarterback when he is cleared for 11-on-11. Allen isn’t without his rookie blemishes, but everyone can recognize the promise here.
It might be a departure from the norm for a rookie like Allen to contribute in Kansas City. But the Chiefs need more departures from the norm. Normalcy ended with a 6-11 record last season and an untenable situation. They need more players who can disrupt the status quo and force the coaching staff’s hand. Hopefully, Allen can be that type of player for Kansas City in 2026. It’ll all truly start for him next Friday in St. Joe.
